Don't let the strip mall location discourage you from dining here - this is a great spot. It's pricey, but food is excellent and there's something for everyone...the menu is very extensive. Really nice wine list. Service was great. We were stuffed from dinner but got persuaded by our server to get the crème brulee - amazing. Not your classic crème brule - but so creamy and delicious. BIG portion, so it shoud be shared. Great night out here!

Went here for dinner recently as this place has a great rep even drawing clientele from Miami. I thought the food was great and the service excellent it was just the prices that were outrageous---$46 for half a chicken and $8 per Budweiser. If you have money to burn a great place if not you can get the same quality of food and a better view at Houston's for 2/3rds the price. Both have valet parking.

We haven't been here in ages. The food, as always, was amazing. The people watching - even better. Face lifts and boob jobs and giant lips. It was a circus of people. The wait ftaff was pleasant but aloof. We had the snapper with carmelized onions which was very good. The duck and smoked mozarella ravioli were great. Good wine selection. We had a bottle of Row 11. It was a nice dinner. I didn't feel particularly at home or comfortable. The whole place felt a little stiff. Could be all the botox. I'm not sure I'll be running back but the food is great.

OK, service, good food presentation, went there for Brunch on Sunday, the food had no flavor and it was extremely overpriced, definitely not worth it.

Fabulous food, amazing service and perfect ambiance. European style, not what you would expect in Pompano and Ft Lauderdale area. A bit on the expensive side but if you truly want to have a great meal, it is well worth it. The blue cheese, pine crusted rack of lamb was to die for as well as the Tuna and Wahoo Sashimi to start, very light but so tasty. My partner had the three peppercorn filet mignon with the 3 cheese au gratin potato, as well, Florida stone crabs with a key lime dipping sauce, amazzzzzing. Wine list selection is excellent, you can also ask which wine would be best suited to your meal. The deserts are also incredible, if you have room, enjoy the chocolate souffle cake, you won't be dissapointed. Bon Apetit!!

I went to a wine pairing event held by the folks at Wine Watch (haven't been yet? check them out too!). It is located in a strip mall and quite the hidden gem. Valet parking was complimentary. Cafe Maxx served appetizers during the pairing. We then chose to stay for dinner and see what else they had to offer. That turned out to be a great decision. Every single thing we ordered was outstanding. I won't even describe each one in detail because there was no bad choice amongst these. We all kept picking at each other's plates to try it all. This is what we had; Crispy Fried Calamari with tropical fruit BBQ Beef Brisket Point Reyes Blue Cheese Crostini Stuffed Mushrooms Spring Rolls Sea Scallops Pad Thai Bananas Foster's Bread Pudding Fallen Chocolate Flourless Cake Creme Brûlée Bourbon Pecan Pie The interior is very quaint because of it's dimmed lighting. Decor is simple and understated. We asked to be moved from the regular table we used during the pairing to a more private booth. The waitress we had during the pairing was great. The one we had during dinner was just OK. She seemed to disappear quite a bit. A couple of the wines we chose from the list were not available and that was disappointing. When we did find one that was available, it was not served at the right temperature. It might not be a big deal to some people but it is to me. Ultimately, the food was memorable enough. I would like to return and try more items from their (ever-changing) menu. Perhaps we will have better luck with our wine and service then.

The food is amazing! Kitchen is one of the best in South Florida. Staff is professional and knowledgeable. Never been disappointed with any meal, always leave more impressed. Prices are high-end but absolutely worth it.

It is hard to find a restaurant in Broward County that goes above and beyond the norm when it comes to cuisine. NY and Miami spoil the taste buds with outstanding restaurants....so driving to Pompano Beach on East Atlantic Blvd.....turning into a Plaza strip....and handing your vehicle to a black-tie Valet. Plaza Strip....Valet.....Fine Cuisine ?? .....so here it is. Well.....I am more than happy to say that Cafe Maxx was one of the greatest surprises I could have ever imagined. Honestly.....the only way to describe this culinary surprise is "5 Star Restaurant in a 4 Star atmosphere." Let me start by saying.....the cuisine is genius. If you want to treat your taste buds...Cafe Maxx is a must. No joke.....they easily compete with the best when it comes to cuisine. The only reason for 4 stars? Cafe Maxx sits in the corner of a plaza strip... in a remodeled....but slightly bland "fine diner" atmosphere. Based on food....5 stars is an understatement. I so wish the owners could just hire a designer and turn this place into the fine dining atmosphere the food really deserves. The cuisine deserves a better setting..... It is simply an interior designer away from becoming an exceptional 5 Star Restaurant with lines out the door...Yes....it is that good! Ok. Valet Service. Walk in.....friendly greeting....and within minutes....my wife and I were seated. (Polished wood and bland setting....not exciting....but very clean....open kitchen). The hostess was very courteous.....complemented my wife on her hair....Happy wife...Happy life....good move. We ordered the Caviar appetizer and the tuna sashimi pizza we had heard so much about....NOW I GET IT!!!! This is where the beige walls don't even matter anymore because Cafe Maxx sets the culinary standards so high that it doesn't even matter. The Caviar was exceptional....from presentation to taste. The tuna sashimi "pizza" is heavenly. Thin crispy lavash-style bread with fresh sashimi topping and.....well.....you have to try it to understand. For dinner: Stone Crabs. The stone crabs were fresh... served with Maxx's Specialty Key Lime Sauce (on the side). The sauce was a little tangy-sweet...not for me....so the hostess who was very attentive, immediately brought hot melted butter. Ahhhhh......now it was perfect. Cafe Maxx is a neighborhood gem. Although I wish the setting was more...possibly modern or romantic.. or even had a theme...I must say that the cuisine and service more than make up for it. Given the choice...I pick 5 Star cuisine....and therefore highly recommend Cafe Maxx. It is a must try and certainly a wonderful surprise.

Upscale menus, beautiful Pompano Beach. I has a sashimi tuna with caviar pizza and loved it. Then had a Vanilla Bean Cream Brule, scrumptious. Photos included. I had to bite Ino that pizza before the photo because it was just calling out to me. Met the owners who have been there for over 32 years, nice people.

Three of us stopped in during the October 'Dine Out Lauderdale' event. All of us ordered from the three-course $35 prix fixe menu that had been prepared for the 'Dine Out' clientele. Everything we had was great: appetizers, entrees and desserts. As an appetizer, I had the wild mushroom and escargot pot pie, which was delicious. And I ordered the peppercorn crusted pork tenderloin. Outstanding. As I type this review, I honestly can't remember what my two friends ordered, but we all tried each other's aps and entrees and all of them were great. (That much I do remember...!!!) ;) For dessert, I had the tropical carrot cake - which I loved. One of my fellow diners said that it tasted a little bit too 'tropical' (because of the coconut) and not 'carrot cake' enough. I didn't mind, though. I really liked the tropical twist. The relatively small place was full when we were there on a Sunday evening. Service was quick and efficient, even though our particular server was a tad on the 'clinical' side. Wasn't a problem at all. Just something that each of us noticed. Definitely will be back to order from the chef's regular menu.

I was not impressed. Maybe since I heard such great things about this restaurant and the reviews are generally positive my expectations were high, but on the whole I was underwhelmed. First, the prices for a strip mall restaurant in Pompano are on par with more upscale restaurants with more desirable locations. You would therefore think that the service and food would stand out on every level but on the whole everything I ate was rather ho hum. Now granted I was there on Christmas night and our server was nice, but they ran out of quite a few menu items and the food did not stand out. My goat cheese and beet salad was drenched in dressing and was not creative or artfully presented. Chopped lettuce, chopped beets, and a fried disk of goat cheese made up this rather uninspired dish. Another diners salad was described as oily. The tuna pizza was the best appetizer sampled. For my entree I went with the $42 grouper. It was a nice fillet but the tomato based sauce it was served in, while not offensive, was severely lacking in any robust or special flavor. The rice cake served along with it was not appetizing. Another diners rib eye (prices on par with top steakhouses) needed to be returned to the kitchen as it came out severely undercooked. I heard no complaints regarding the stone crab claws. A basic Caesar salad and massive chicken dish were good but not unique in presentation or taste, which one would expect at a restaurnat with such lofty ambitions. I did not try dessert. Maybe I caught this restaurant on an off night being Christmas, and normally I would give them another shot but not with the excessive prices charged.

Second time here in the year and cannot recommend this place enough! The lamb chops were outta this world and im not huge on lamb but this shit was sent and slayed by Jesus himself... The tuna pizza is mega legit... I could eat per day easily. The carrot cake was so moist and delicious . vino and service on point. Get yo ass there stat! (easy parking in the nearby lots gratis, or valet if you want, in the plaza right by publix off atlantic, intercoastal area) Take advantage of the dine out Lauderdale deal they do

Good (not great) food. Decent enough I've returned a few times. Not more often because I live in Miami. That said, service matters!!! When I call ahead and I'm told you open at 5:30 PM and that despite your cooking class I can sit at the bar and eat, that is what I expect! Not unreasonable. Here is a tip: if you're having a special event, put your special hours of operation on the door so people know. Also, better inform your staff on what to say to customers when they call or show up! The hostess just ignored me. The bartender did not do much better. Despite being the bearer of bad news, he was completely unapologetic. Now that is what I call Service!! I was on a tight schedule and called ahead. Good food and all, I'm struggling to find excuses for them wasting my time. I just can't find any!!!!

My husband and i visited Cafe Maxx on a Friday evening for dinner and drinks. Great street presence and valet parking available. Once inside ambience us good, white linen table cloths and an intimate feel. I gave it 3 stars because of the price to food ratio. Average dish is $25+ even for apps and the amount of quality of food was average. I had a ceasar salad which was overly cheesy and the onion snapper which was also average in taste and size. Service was descent with a smiling waitress just not overly attentive or interested after we told her it was our first time here. All in all it was an adequate experience and probably would return in the future.

Came back to this hot spot because every time were in Fla. on vacation we stop here for a bite. We sat at the bar that seats around 8-10 people. Getting directly to the point: the food was good, but Bar Service sucked! The bartender did not have a personality - he was as dry and stale as the bread and flat chips they served us with our meal. You would think someone who is dealing with the public would be more engaging with the customers. First of all, we told him we would be eating at the bar and after he gave us our drinks he walk away and started making drinks for the other customers without asking us what we wanted to order. We finally caught his eye to tell him we were ready to order. The couple next to us complained that they asked him for bread, but never got it. I don't think we will be eating here any time soon since there are other new places opening up in the area. *Note: save your money and park your car yourself, doesn't make sense to pay for Valet Parking the Restruant is in a strip mall at the end.

I enjoyed the Cafe Maxx experience last night with my beautiful wife. All courses were superb! I reccommend the salad topped with goat cheese as well as the Japanese eggplant appetizer. Strongly suggest the scallops for main course....cooked to perfection and the rissotto to die for. Sorry no room for dessert but I've had the apple tart in the past and was great. Nice rich full bodied coffee to complete the evening. Service was outstanding!

Came here last year for Fort Lauderdale Dines Out, so yes this review is very very delayed! Cafe Maxx is your typical secret Florida restaurant - tucked in away in a random strip mall (that was under construction when I was last there, thus making the exterior even more hidden). Point is however, this is a secret hidden gem. Like I mentioned, we came for the Dining Out promotion. Not sure how busy Cafe Maxx is regularly, but it was extra packed when we were there, tables felt cramped together and volume was very loud - however that didn't stop us from enjoying a delicious meal! Probably the best pork chop I have ever had, and the best stone ground grits anywhere! Excited to just learn that they have brunch! I'll have to check that out asap! Yes Cafe Maxx is pricey, so I will definitely be back this year for Ft Lauderdale Dines Out again!

I'm giving five stars because there is no other option. The employees are attentive and personable. The ambiance is understated and cozy. But most importantly the food. I always find something on the menu that blows me away. Chef Olly truly cares about his menu. I'm so glad this place exists. If you had a bad meal you were in the wrong place.

    (5)
  • Karim G.

We've been coming here for years. No matter what the mood, Olly (chef and co-owner) knows how to bring the perfect pairing to life. The signature dish is is the "Sweet Onion Crusted Snapper" which is a must try at least once. Primarily because the menu here changes frequently, and seemingly gets more and more interesting every time. Think wild mushroom bread pudding sounds tame? Then think again, because its that kind of creativity that makes Cafe Maxx. Now that you have an idea of what awaits your palette, lets talk about the bar. Ronnie is the main bartender he is the type of bartender you tell what you're in the mood for and he makes it happen. Bourbon, bacon, rosemary and you'll experience a solid libation that will think your in the south of France. This restaurant caters to the few that appreciate creativity and class in food. Nothing too outrageous that your parents wouldn't be willing to try, but exciting enough that you'll find yourself saying, "I never would have thought of that..."

We have eaten dinner many times at Cafe Maxx and have never been disappointed. We decided to try the Sunday Brunch and we were not impressed. The Crab Omelet was dry and had virtually no crab. The Eggs Benedict was way overcooked. The Cinnamon Roll had to be cut with a knife. It was either stale or had been warmed and then sat there for a long time. We would have sent everything back but friends were treating us to brunch and we didn't want to create a scene. (Later we learned they were equally disappointed.) Service was adequate but not equal to the service at dinner. My guess is you don't serve breakfast items if your kitchen is not suited for it.

We ate here on Friday night 5/9/14. It's a very upscale but casual restaurant. The atmosphere was very casual but very very nice. The service was excellent & the waitstaff was very friendly & very attentive. Lastly the food was off the hook, beyond excellent. My girlfriend had foie gras, braised boneless short rib of beef & creme brûlée. I had a fillo pastry purse filled with crab & andouille sausage, twin sliced duck breast with braised collard greens with bacon & onion & a cheddar flan & butterscotch bread pudding with sea salt caramel ice cream. The weren't any bad bites at our table. Our meal was exquisite. Plus we had 2 bottles of sparkling water. Total bill before tip was $160.00. We will be back.

I have eaten here several times and it is always great food. It has a menu that changes based on the season, but there are some staple meals, like the filet with a pepper based sauce that are always on the menu. It has something for steak livers and seafood people alike. It is pricey, but worth the money.

Elegant setting, brunch was very good bacon was super thick and crispy! Duck egg was cooked perfectly. I enjoyed the BLT breakfast salad and I would go again for brunch or dinner. Service staff were friendly and personable.

Don't ever eat at Cafe Maxx in Pompano. We went to Cafe Maxx last night for one of my bf bday. I had scallops (which is know to be a signature dish). As soon as I finished with my meal I felt sick. This sort of things can happen in any place. The upsetting part is the way Cafe Maxx Management (Darrel Broek) has reacted. Amongst all it was a $1000 meal for our part ($100 plus pp). In small restaurants, a hole in the wall restaurant, they would at least give you your refund for what you eat and an apology. Cafe Maxx reacted rudely, non apologetic and neglected to take fault. Never eating at this place!!! Not worth it. Specially in South Florida when you have tons of options. I can believe this is restaurants claims to be "fined dining" . I had the worse experience with the manager, Darrel Broek. He neglected to take action with my food poisoning. I was vomiting in their bathroom. What more proof do they want? The next day during a phone conversation. Darrel even said "food poisoning does not happen soon after eating, speak with your doctor". My answer : " my boyfriend is a Doctor." Email followed: Food poisoning does occur right away. Since Mr. Darell has inaccurate information please contact CDC poison control. As food poisoning can occur right away. And advise which doctor will tell you otherwise. There are numerous of toxin based food borne disease that can occur in less than two hours and even cases less than 45minutes. Unbelievable!

One of the best meals I have had in Florida, period!! Cafe Maxx is worth the trip from Miami Beach!! Best dessert I have ever had!!!!! The Kentucky Derby was a mixture of chocolate and pecans topped with vanilla ice cream and surrounded by a chocolate sause that was simply magic. When I asked the chef how he was able to make the pie stand the way he did he answered, "lots and lots of eggs!" (See pictures) Be aware, the menu changes here on a daily basis so don't expect a repeat of the meal I had but I'm sure your going to find something equally as delicious. The entire experience I had was a pleasure! Our mistaken arrival time put us at Cafe Maxx an hour early than expecte and I decided it was time for a few beers! I started off with the Samichlans Classic. Don't drink this 'beer' if you want a beer. The fact it is labeled a beer is a misrepresentation. It was horrible, tasted like cough syrup. Had to send it back but I can't say the bartender didn't warn me. It was in fact, quite a unique heavy and syrupy beer. Needing something lighter I went for the a beer from the Mendocino Brewing Company, the Blond Ale, a much lighter citrus and slightly sweet beer. We ordered the Filet Mignon Beef Tartar with blue goat cheese peppedews, capers, crostini & basil, incredible! Unfortunately, our guest had a run in with the state police and would be another 30 minutes, so we ordered a few more libations. The Sprecher Oktoberfest was a really delicious heavy beer that warmed me up just right. I liked the Sprecher Oktoberfest so much I tried another Oktoberfest on the menu with no name, just a mysterious Oktober Fest Pumpkin. Again great beer. Once our guest finally arrived, we sat down and were greeted by Daryl the owner who could not have been nicer and more excited about the new additions to the days menu. He strongly suggested we try his Tuna Pizza, of which we tried and his recommendation did not disappoint. All I can say is Hog Snapper, amazing. During dinner we had the bartender make specialty drinks off the top of his head, which included a blood orange, cognac, simple syrup and orange liquor up and a whisky (Woodford Reserve) up with fresh ginger, crushed mint and a hint of simply syrup, both tasted very good but I prefere whisky so I liked the second drink.

I am new to Yelp but I like the fact that you get to evaluate your own personal experience. Cafe Maxx has been around for many years but they consistently deliver excellency! Their menu changes but their specialties are always there. Their Duck and Smoked Mozzarella ravioli are out of this world. Their desserts unbelievable!!! Definitely my favorite restaurant in So Florida!!!

I think this place is not what it used to be. The fois gras was the smallest I have ever been served and with a bread pudding almost, just not on point. The lamb chops lacked in.....Flavor and seasoning. Just not worth it.

Great place, great service, great food! You can't bit that! Here you get what you pay for! Tuna pizzete is to die for Pasta with jumbo shrimp is perfectly cooked and full of fresh flavor Filet Mignon is tender and juice Rockefeller oysters are amazing No way to go wrong with this place if you want a great meal and great service.

Over-rated. We had heard a lot of great things about this restaurant and finally decided to try it out. We went during Fort Lauderdale's annual Dining Out week, where you visit various restaurants at a fixed price. Maybe it was because of the special price but, the food was nothing more than OK. The portions were small. And, the service was mediocre. Waiting 5 minutes for a fork and 15 minutes for the tab is not my idea of good service. As the two-star rating says: "Meh. I've experienced better." Maybe it was our high expectations, but we won't return.

Living in Pompano Beach for 15 years, Cafe Maxx just never seems to let me down. Haven't eaten there in 6 month. Had several important clients in town, they all RAVED about the Sashimi Pizza ( A MUST HAVE ) If you are ever are looking for a Great Place to have totally unique dinning...I give Cafe Maxx two thumbs up. Thanks Darrel & Oliver !!!!

What a surprise! My husband and I were going to a movie and googled a restaurant that was rated by Zagat nearby The movie theater. We were led to this fantastic place. The food was so fresh, the service was impeccable and their signature cocktails were amazing! We left with full, satisfied bellies. We highly recommend this restaurant.

Some of the recent reviews on here for this place were kind of negative, and I don't get it. MY family and I had a wonderful time dining here. My wife and I could probably be called Foie Gras snobs, and it was amazing here. Probably in the Top 3 we've ever had and we've eaten it in some of the best restaurants in the world. Also, we had 5 star service from Justin- he was a very attentive waiter. Tuna tartar pizza was awesome and duck ravioli was great. Hog fish onion crusted snapper was FANTASTIC. Even though the name was a bit misleading as there is no crust at all ( important to Gfree diners like myself). No wonder this place has been around so long... They know what they're doing!

Food wise, it's definitely one of the top restaurants in the Lauderdale area. The menu is made up daily and always with the very best and freshest of ingredients. Because of the fact of the changing menu it would be difficult to recommend any particular item. The menu is always creative, unique and inventive. I am always hit by something I have either never tried or never hear of previously. For example, Caviar Pie was on the menu during my most recent visit and they also have dishes not often seen in South Florida like fresh Hog Fish Snapper. The chef at Café Maxx is well known in the area and rightly so. He instructs various cooking classes and his preparation are always done in a unique, creative way that enhances every culinary experience I have ever had at Café Maxx. The drawbacks? Well, the décor doesn't amount to much and neither does its location which some have best described as being "strip mall chic." It's also pricey. An appetizer, salad, entrée and a couple of drinks will probably set you back a full Franklin....$100; but it could be more. However, for those who enjoy the uniqueness and creativity of culinary arts served in an unpretentious atmosphere, the experience is well worth the price. As for any hints I might pass on, I'd suggest that unless you are going there intending to be a part of a wine tasting group, schedule your dinning experience for another time as things tend to be loud and the wait staff generally becomes confused.

If you are the adventurous sort then Cafe Maxx is the place for you! I am a big fan of this place due to 2 things...1. They have a new menu daily . And 2. The food is fantastic. During my latest visit I had the Atkins Shrimp and Seafood Scampi, great dish and the seafood was cooked perfectly, the broth had amazing flavor and i never missed the pasta. My date had the lamb chops with goat cheese which was rich and decadent and every bite was a full body experience! This place is truly a gem of a find in an area that is slowly being taking over by mediocre chains. By the way make sure to save room for dessert the range of options and quality is out of this world!

We went on the recommendation of Amercian Express consierge. Very nicely and tastefully decorated. But, it really ends there. If you're used to high end dinning and service (like capital grille) then you will be in for a let down. Not a great wine selection and the food was just barely average really. Much better choices out there for average of $100 per person. Would not go back.

Food is exquisitly prepared. Very large portions. Ingredients are fresh and fabulous. I have never had a less than perfect meal there. Love it and will continue to be a frequent diner there. Tuna pizza and caviar pie are must try apps. Sweet onion Snapper is their signature entree and is excellent.

I originally called the owner an unflattering name. Although he deserves the title, I have taken upon myself to remove it. We had made plans far in advance for this special occasion; my birthday. Out of all the restaurants in the Ft Lauderdale area, I chose this one. We have spend a LOT of money over the past few years but apparently what counts with him is what you spend "tonight". He was rude insulting and I will never spend another dime there. The food is great if you can choke down the attitude. No thanks! Followup: The owner of Cafe Maxx called to take exception to the unfaltering review I posted on Yelp. Yes, we had been there enough to know who we were. He started the conversation with "I hope you are happy" This was even before he bothered to identify. As a matter of fact, he made these comments to my partner who had no idea that I had posted the review. After a short discussion he offered no apologies, return invitations or excuses. Not really sure why he bothered.

Love Cafe Maxx, the food is innovative and always wonderful. They have wine tastings there on occasion as well. I only gave it four stars as the atmosphere is not the best for how expensive it is, and it is overpriced by about $5-7 per entree. Still love it though!

Cafe' Maxx never disappoints! Chef Oliver is consistent in quality and skill while always being innovative. We spend the summer eating in acclaimed Napa Valley restaurants and Cafe Maxx is the only local restaurant that can compete! The staff is knowledgeable in wine pairing and familiar with a wide range of wines. This restaurant is a local gem with lots of sparkle!

Whoever rates Cafe Maxx less than 4 stars you can go back to Applebee's now. This place has been around longer than any other privately owned restaurant in the area. Awesome appetizers (meals by themselves), to die for entrees with out of this world presentation and desserts that will melt you where you sit. I sat at the bar. I ate light that night so I enjoyed the crab stuffed tacos (special menu) that literally made my taste buds jump for joy. For dessert I chowed down on their famous Deep Dish Bourbon & Chocolate Pecan Pie...I fell out of my sit (metophorically). Perfect place to take a date or to sit at the bar, have a nice glass of wine and chat with David or Ron. I personally enjoyed the atmosphere, location and most important the service. Oh and they have valet!!

An overpriced dining experience that is trying way too hard to be gourmet. $40 dollars for a Texas sized plate of Lamb belly complemented with of heaping heavy mashed potatoes loaded with BBQ sauce and green beans. Not high class dining if you ask me. I'd much rather have gone to Houston's right next door for some amazing ribs if I knew thats what they were serving at Cafe Maxx. As far as the wine list.... they are fully stocked in the run of the mill big name expensive wines ( Opus one etc). Who can't pick those for a restaurant. But when it comes to the mid to low price range they put very little effort into finding quality wines to fill the price range of 40-80. I would rather have Costco select my wines than Cafe Maxx, not what you would expect from this ' Class of Restaurant ' Finally, If you want FOOD POISONING Cafe Maxx if the place to go!! My gf had the Sea Scallops and about 1-2 hours after the meal she was vomiting and almost ended up in the hospital. She called the health department (CDC) and was told that it was most likely food poisoning. The manger / owner said that it is impossible to have food poisoning within a couple hours of eating. He was very rude and refused to apologize or even offer a discount to the cost of the dish. He will not return any email or phone calls. SOOO. If you trust the managers opinion on food poisoning and not the opinion of the CDC then by all means, eat a nice meal at Cafe Maxx. I completely understand that in some cases it may not be the fault of the restaurant, but not standing behind the quality of your food and showing no compassion for your customer are inexcusable. Personally there are too many good restaurants in South Florida to waste my money here.

I live in the neighborhood and have been to Cafe Maxx three times now. Food is good. No question about it, but the servers are, at best, indifferent. They never make me feel like I want to come back.

New menu, everyday?! Really? I'm in. They have some staples on the menu, and then do variations from some staples, but their entrees, do in fact, change every day. Part of their bread basket was a doughy, pizza bread option, which was delicious and came as quite a surprise. I had a couple of duck and smoked mozzarella raviolis for an app- borderline incredible, and their take on brisket for dinner, served with a jalapeno infused sweet barbeque- also quite good. My only knock is their wine list. In a day and age where we all know we can get a good drinkable bottle of wine under $40, they had limited options. I love the new, "affordable" wine trend, and would have preferred some more options. We settled on a $75 Washington State bottle: Powers- expensive but delicious. We'll be back.

I have been dining and celebrating at Cafe Maxx every special occasion in our families lives for the last 25 years. We've had birthday parties, anniversaries, graduations and bridal showers. The waiters and waitresses are very friendly and never intimidating and the food is beautiful and delicious at the same time. Sweet Onion Crusted Snapper has been one of my faves for many years and the Lobster Enchilada (not always on the menu) is probably my all time fave. They just started serving Sunday Brunch and I can tell you without a doubt both the traditional Eggs Benedict and the Crab and Spinach Eggs Benedict are the best I've had anywhere in this world. The Cinnamon Buns....omg....so fantastic!! I always tells my friends, "If you are ever looking for me on a Saturday night, you will find me at Cafe Maxx." That is no lie!!

Overwraught, overpriced menu. Would do better to simplify each dish, take out a couple of ingredients, and season appropriately. A raspberry and white chocolate bread pudding (quite delicious) does not need an entire ice cream sandwich on the side. Not at a restaurant that portends to fine dining. $40 entrees do not live up to the price.

DIABETICS BEWARE After a poor experience and bad service 4 years go, we decided to give it another try. We had baked oysters which were good. After that the onion crusted snapper and their famous scallops. While I would expect the "sweet onion" would be sweet, I would not think anything else should be drenched in sugar, especially the scallops. There was no indication on that menu that the scallops would taste like desert. The place is obviously a darling of the local food critics (a matter of who you know I guess) and it has some elated reviewers here. Good for them, as they are clearly successful. However, I am done with them. And yes, when you leave feeling bad about what you ate, it sure is overpriced.

I'd heard the rave reviews for years, and even though Cafe Maxx is quite close to me, I never got around to trying it until recently. I'm so glad I finally managed to visit! I took my mother here during Dine Out Lauderdale, where quite a few high-end restaurants participate by offering $35 prix-fixe menus during the month of October. Cafe Maxx by far had the widest selection to choose from, and you got four courses instead of the usual three. My mom and I ordered identical meals, except for our desserts. We were brought a basket of bread (an assortment of different breads and crackers), and we both chose the kobe beef meatballs for our first course. They were served in a tangy, spicy Asian sauce with wasabi mashed potatoes. Oh. My. God. You could just put an entire plate of those in front of me and I'd be the happiest girl on earth. One of the tastiest morsels I've ever had the pleasure of eating. I would give just about anything for that recipe. Our second course was a Caesar salad, followed by our petite filet mignons served with au gratin potatoes. Here is where they lost a star from me. I ordered my steak medium well, and it came out rare... not even close to what I ordered. Meanwhile, my mom ordered medium and hers was cooked perfectly. So I sent the steak back and waited a few minutes for them to cook it longer. They brought it back to the table, and this time it was medium rare. I sent it back again... and by the time I got it back the third time, my mom had finished her meal (she wanted to wait, but I told her not to let her own food get cold). Once cooked properly, the steak was great... but I was fairly disappointed that they were so far off what I had ordered. As for the au gratin potatoes (a dish I normally love)... these were terrible. My mom at hers and thought they were fine, but they had the strangest taste that I couldn't stand. For dessert, I chose the bread pudding, while my mom decided on the cheesecake. We both agreed the bread pudding was fantastic, but the cheesecake... not so much. Overall, I'm very glad I experienced this place, and I would definitely come again... keeping my fingers and toes crossed that those meatballs will be on the menu!

Been here twice and both times the food was great. It is a little loud but very quaint place. The first time I experienced cafe maxx was during one of their cooking classes. Very good experience because we learned how to cook many items and then sample paired with wine. The second time I had the lobster ravioli and it was good also. Will return......

Good, not great. Expected much better for the price . We had the lobster ravioli and the duck ravioli, again,it was good, but not worthy of the amazing reviews and reputation. Maybe he was having an off night. I would go back to give it another try. Maybe their meat dishes are better. The dessert menu was pretty creative and looked pretty tasty.

This place is really great. I had their Duck with grilled peachs and chipotle sauce. No real taste of Chipotle (which I use all the time) it did taste like all spice, cloves, and nutmeg, all in all very thanksgiving/christmas-ie. The Peaches were grilled perfectly, I just wish they gave you more than 2, and the sweet potatoes were perfect with the sauce and duck. I also had the flourless cake which was amazing! WOW! Hot chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and hot fudge with fresh berries, I stuffed myself with this, so good. All in all very good dinner when I am in town I will come here again.

Save your money! We arrived to a huge crowd at the door who was waiting to be seated in a private room in the back, and were totally ignored. I had to practically beg to be seated, which we finally were. I was surprised to see many of the tables filled with many wine glasses, and again, i had to practically beg to find out what was going on, which was a wine tasting. I would've appreciated being told that there was a restaurant wine tasting that night when I made my reservation, as I would've chosen another evening to dine there. Again, once we were seated, I felt I had to practically beg for everything, from ordering to getting the check. It seemed that the wine tasting dominated the evening. Our meal was fair, we were basically ignored, and I have to say that I felt uneasy leaving the normal tip, but did so. I decided that since the valet parked was the best part of our evening there, I would tip him a little extra than normal, but after I did, I noticed that they had eaten the chewing gum in my car, having left the gum container wide open for me to see. Well, that topped off ,the evening! I will NEVER eat there again. Enough said.

Wow! I have a new favorite restaurant! After reading all the great reviews, I had high expectations of this place, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint!! I started with a glass of bartender-recommended Pinot noir.. Very nice! Then when seated, we ordered the pistachio-fried shrimp and the tuna app pizza! The shrimp and the fruit salsa they were upon were great, but that tuna pizza!!!! Oh my.. I could live off that appetizer! Could have eaten quite a few orders of that! We also ordered the lobster and shrimp bisque- very tasty with pieces of shrimp and lobster in it! For entrees, we ordered the twin maple duck breast and the onion crusted snapper! The duck was the most tender, tastiest duck I have ever had. It was served with raisins and sweet potato and was just divine! The onion crusted snapper was to die for!!! I repeat, to die for! The onions and sauce.. Oh my!! Sooo good! For dessert, we ordered the vanilla creme brûlée! A perfect end to a perfect meal!! I have to also comment about how fast the service was- most impressive! I can not wait to return!

This place was outstanding. Had the tuna sashimi pizza, the teriyaki grilled mahi mahi, and another evening special. All outstanding. Had one of the dessert specials as well. Good wine list. Only issue was that we were not extremely hungry and could not try more dishes (would have loved to split a pasta course or add another appetizer). Eating late lunches is never a good idea when you have dinner reservations. This is a must visit while in Fort Lauderdale.

Food deserves 5 stars. Service not commensurate with food quality. Unfortunate as their chef is outstanding. Ask for summer special, you'll be surprised with depth of selections. I'm always disappointed when high quality food is not matched by service. Suggest management address this issue.

As you can see the previous reviews, this place is amazing! Started off with some cali wine, a very small winery out of Anderson Valley. Ordered the Tuna Pizza and Calamary, both were amazing! As for my entrée, I went with the pine crusted mahi with mango salsa...needless to say it was fantastic! Of course had to finish with a desert, the Key Lime pie was off the chain! Trust me.. you won't be disappointed, specially because they are part of Dine out Lauderdale, $35 specials from Sun-Thur!

This place is amazing. I've eaten here a few times and been completely wow'd every time. This ranks as one of the best restaurants I've ever been too. They have a few consistent items on their menu but most items are custom to the day and market availability. The food is incredible, service is impeccable and the entire experience is great. If you've never been, GO!

Hadn't been to cafe maxx in a long while and figured I'd try it once again. Went on sat night at 6:00. Service was excellent; ambience ok; food ok. We had the the seafood chowder which was ok, but nothing special. The stone crab was very good, but very pricy. One claw cost $20 and the dipping sauce was mediocre (tasted like thousand island dressing). Signature scallops alright; duck breast in berry sauce very good. My creme brûlée was a big disappointment but the pecan pie was good. All and all with two drinks and one glass or wine bil came to $209 for two with $33 tip. My opinion is that the food wasn't worth the price. Have had much better for much less elsewhere.

Absolutely continues to be the best standard in the area for years! We went again last night and they simply provide the best food and service that Broward County has to offer. Food is exceptional in every way. Signature snapper and duck were the main courses prepared to perfection. Calamari and pasta appetizers were simply over the top. Desert OMG the apple tart with cinnamon ice cream is indescribable. Keep it up all we will be back soon!

OK went for our anniversary and saw they were having their neighborhood special. These summer specials are one of the best parts of living east in the off season after putting up with season. NOT HERE. If you don't want to do the specials DONT!!! Food was extremely mediocre. Bread was STALE two times around. Salad drenched in balsamic. My dinner was literally ONE shrimp, ONE scallop and THREE green beans. Hubby had ravioli swimming in sauce. Dessert was supposed to be warm apple crisp with ice cream. Hardly warm and again drenched in sauce, caramel sauce. My feeling is whenever something is drenched on sauce the food is mediocre at best. Service was efficent if not almost snooty. Best part of the night: The parking attendant actually concerned we did not like the restaurant. This was our second and last time we will go to Cafe Max....two strikes and YOU ARE OUT!!

My husband and I recentley dined at Cafe Max on the Dine Out Menus. First of all the server threw the menu at us, barely introduced herself and ran away. Our first course, shrimp with lime was so tough we needed a steak knife to cut through to possible eat it. A group of diners walked out of the restaurant only having a glass of wine and bread due to the slow service. The food was fair....Not worth the $35 per person, even on the Dine Out menu. We have eaten at Cafe Max in the past and things have changed. My husband tried to talk to the owner on our way out and he did not want to hear any customer complaints. Unfortunately, we will never dine at Cafe Max again.

We hadn't been here in years, but the great reviews drew us back. Our server was efficient, not overly friendly. My salad with citrus mint vinaigrette was excellent, very nice refreshing flavor combination. My husband had the caviar pie, and said it was fine but very rich and not much caviar flavor. I tasted it, and it just seemed like a heavy cream cheese base with some cold stuff on top. I'm not a caviar fan, so maybe the mild flavor appeals to most like me. I would recommend splitting a serving, as it seemed very heavy. For entrée, I had the scallops & grits...a nice take on shimp & grits. The chorizo sausage bits made it even more excellent. My husband had the pheasant, which seemed odd on a South Florida menu. It was fantastic...he let me taste some. Very rich flavor, nice vegetables....a good fall-style meal which may be just what some crave once they get tired of Florida fish. I had to select the ice cream trio for dessert, and wanted to lick the plate. We're glad it's still here, and will be back.

Cafe Maxx is my all time FAVORITE restaurant. The food is spectacular , creative and always cooked to perfection. The staff is not only on point but pretty terrific. I like walking into a restaurant where they recognize you even if you've been only a couple of times. Don't skip dessert. Their creme brulee isn't the typical version, they go all out with theirs. If you have a chance to attend a wine dinner, do, they are a hoot!

Fantastic! Last night was my third time at Cafe Maxx and I can't get enough! Definitely try as many appetizers as possible, with the Tuna pizza at the top of the list! I absolutely love this place!

Hands down this is my favorite restaurant. Food, service, and wine list are all outstanding. I have never had a bad experinece here. If you are looking for casual fine dining; it does not get better than this in Broward County. The menu changes nightly but certain popular items are mainstays that have been on the menu for years. The Tuna Sashimi Pizza is a must have as far as appetizers go, this thing is incredible, it is crunchy, creamy, salty, sweet, tangy and refreshing all at once. It is light enough for two people to share and still have plenty of room for your entree. As far as entree's are concerned you can't really go wrong with any of them, But if you like fish i recommend the Sweet Onion Crusted Yellowtail Snapper, and if you like beef order the Three Peppercorn Filet Mignon. It is worth leaving a little room for dessert, beacuse it is always excellent. -Enjoy .

Outstanding !! This is by far one of THE most talented Chef's in the country ! We have been coming to Cafe Maxx for ove 8 years regularly, and felt compelled to write a review after our last meal there. From beginning to end a foodies dream ! The best Ahi Tuna Pizza we have ever eaten anywhere (so fresh). The creativity Chef Olly puts into his dinner entree's is always a treat. From the moment you walk in and are greeted by an owner to the extremely pleasant and knowledgable waitstaff, you know dinner is going to be amazing !! If you have not been to Cafe Maxx you are cheating yourself out of one of THE greatest restaurants in So. Florida and in the country !!

Cafe Maxx is as special as it gets, with real food in a real place, run by real chefs. Oliver is an amazing technician. All the staff are attentive and informative, and I enjoy hanging out at the initimate bar. It has served Fort Lauderdale for many, many years, and is always one of the top spots. This is a go- to place for a very special occasion, wine tastings, cooking classes, or just because you are in the neighborhood. Tender care is given to an array of changing dishes, yet the comfortable standbys are truly memorable. The decor is cool, hip, simple, with some interesting art. But the food is the real star here. The wine list is a true wine afficionada's dream to peruse. Plus, the night I was there, they gave me half off a bottle of a special Californian Zinfandel selection. For an appetizer, the tuna caviar pizza is an amazing combination. Trust me, it sounds strange, but when the flavors mingle on the tongue, something sublime occurs. As a fish eater, order any, and they change nightly. Friends all love the meats. The sides are creative. But on to dessert...last time, I had the apple tart. The pastry was perfect, and we left so satisfied.

This place was amazing, I cannot afford dining here on a normal day, but if someone wants something special this is the place to take them. The location wasn't as posh as the restaurant, but the food didn't disappoint. For my appetizer I had the coconut curry rock shrimp, baked gulf oysters, and the Spanish cheese tasting plate, they all tasted lovely. I must note that I am lactose intolerant and none of the cheeses bothered me, since they were aged. My main was the kalamata olive and goat cheese encrusted lamb chops, these chops were so tender that they melted in my mouth. This was honestly one of the best dining experiences I have had in a long time. One more note, the cocktails weren't to impressive, I ordered a ginger martini and I got sweet blue koolaid.

Although the menu sounded fantastic and the concepts seemed favorable, we ended up with huge chunks of meat lacking any subtle flavors. Standard American cuisine with massive portions that hit you in the face. Steak was tasteless wile the french fries were overly salty. Mustard lamb chops could use less mustard and more thought in flavor development. It seemed as if you weren't a regular, they weren't all that interested. The quality and freshness of the ingredients was spot on, but the chef could use a lighter had. If the prices were better, I would say give it a try but its not worth dropping $150 on a dinner for two. The decor seems half fine dining half pub with booths with sticky seats surrounding a room of white tableclothed tables. The lighting was trendy but the carpet was older. Overall disappointed.

It takes a lot for me to give more than 3 stars for any restaurant. We usually only go to places where I know the chef or owner and generally have a great time. That makes the difference. Any random place can be dissappointing when your expectations are high(based on a great review) and service, food or price kill it for you. I had not been to this restaurant since 1994. It was then an exceptional dinner that I remember to this day; Filet with espresso dry rub crust seared to perfection. We were in town & stopped in the other night because I remembered the restaurant & wanted to see if it was still around (I am not a native floridian). A Tuesday night and the place was not busy. Which can be a bad sign. I do have a rule that if we are not greated by the host within 60 seconds, the experience can only go down from there. Well the hostess greated us right away and seated us immediately. The server did not great us for at least 4 minutes. Now this is not a lifetime but I always think that at least they could say hi I will be with you in a few moments (or" who let YOU in here"), I don't care, just communicate. Anyway our server made a brilliant move when he approached us & made a remark that we looked familiar and he just wanted to refresh our memory about the menu and the daily selection -You sir are going to be a great politician some day. We had the signature tuna pizza. Excellent! the only suggestion would be to go a bit lighter on the wasabi creme cheese. I love the heat but not everyone did. The poultry fan thought that the Chicken w/cherry port jus was the best she ever had The Vegetarian usually is never 'wowed' by a restaurant's typical house veg platter consisting of a spattering of steamed broccoli and carrots. She said the vegetarian dish is was the best she one ever (I secretly think butter & chicken stock was involved, ha-ha). I had the onion crusted snapper, as much as I want to say something was wrong, I can't. (I could pour the madeira sauce on my breakfast). A miscommunication on desserts was rectified and we gorged ourselves on The Carrot cake (discustingly excellent) Chocolate tart and espresso torte - I didn't get any but heard that it was superior. That coming from someone who claims to be 'not a desserter'. Thankfully it wasn't that busy, because we got to enjoy a exceptional meal, great service at a deserved price. You certainly don't get that at any of the popular places down at the Galleria. Cafe Maxx has stood the test of time and succeeds brilliantly. We cannot wait to return.

We brought a large party here for dinner. It was excellent! Menu changes daily which is nice. The selection of food was good too. I would have given it 5 starts, but the service was a little slow. Not sure if they were short handed or what, but the waiter was very nice. We will visit again!

September 21, 2011 Café Maxx RE: DINNER - September 20, 2011 To Whom It May Concern My wife and I had dinner at your establishment last Tuesday night and would like to express to you how very disappointed we are. We are not the type to complain, but we wanted to express our view of the experience. The following is a brief description of the meal: Appetizer: We had the pistachio encrusted oysters, which were just breading. They were over fried and, if they weren't on the shell, you couldn't tell that they were oysters. Main Course: I had the braised short ribs. There was no "rib". It was one piece of meat that was over-done and looked and tasted like pot roast. The demi-glaze was very salty. My wife had the rack of lamb which was tough (undercooked - rare) and luke warm. We would have sent the items back to the kitchen, but it took quite a while to get our meals in the first place. Dessert: Warm apple tart - It was 4 triangles of pie crust topped with ice cream. The crust was very difficult to cut with a fork and there were no apples. Having had this before, it appeared to be old and re-heated. We have dined with you dozens of times and were always pleased, what happened? We just want you to know what our experience was like so that it doesn't happen to others.

Excellent food and great service with an intimate atmosphere. We did the pre-fixe menu and it was all deadly. Had the swordfish with quinoa and wow! They misplaced our reservation and came over to us and fixed it and made sure we knew they had it. The wine was awesome...a malbec that I forget now but its was great. Good Times man Good Times!

You know you have walked into a fantastic place when the owner greets you at the door. You know you are going to enjoy every bite when you can see the open kitchen and the chef/owner in plain site. And you know you have a new favorite when every time you want to go out to eat you crave the name....Cafe Maxx. Every time we go we try something different and I have never been disappointed. In fact my expectations are always surpassed. Not only is their menu seasonal, bu they also offer a "lighter fare" menu list that does not compromise on flavor, the drinks are generous, the wine list diverse and delicious. They even offer cooking classes, wine tastings from novice to expert, and they participate in Broward Dine out. Do your taste buds the favor.

I've been here a couple of times now, and it's been consistently good so far. I don't eat foie gras very often, but I really enjoy their Hudson Valley foie gras. It's actually better than the foie gras that I've eaten in France. My favorite entree here would probably be the goat cheese encrusted lamb chops, which come with a delicious sundried tomato and mixed herb risotto and grilled vegetables. But they have a rather extensive menu and there are lots of other entrees which would also be good. For wine, I usually get a glass of prosecco, which is like Italian champagne. They have very good prosecco here, but their wine list is pretty extensive overall so you really can't go wrong here. For dessert, I usually like to get their homemade ice cream trio for a light and cool treat, but their dessert menu like the rest of their menu is rather extensive, so there's all sorts of stuff you can get for dessert. Overall, this is just an excellent restaurant with a large, but not too large menu with a diverse style of food and drink and desserts. I'd highly recommend it to both locals and tourists whenever you're in the Pompano Beach area.

We've been going here for years. The food and service is always exceptional. My favorite is the snapper. The atmosphere is always so relaxing. Five stars all the way!!! Thank you Cafe Maxx, I brought large groups two nights in a row and each meal was very successful. Menu was very creative and love that they change the menu every night. Food was very good not spectacular, but definitely the best meals I ever had in the Fort Lauderdale area. The service was great and everything we had was very good. Love that the house chardonnay was Markham! I will be back and I looking forward to seeing what's on the menu next.

Dinner was not good. We've enjoyed Cafe Maxx over the years and returned with high hopes of the usual fantastic dining and service. But, the tuna was tough and bland, the duck was cold, and the steak was dry. And, a cockroach was at the table, making the entire experience quite unappetizing.

Love this place. We have been here on several occassions and have never been disappointed. Don't judge a book by its cover. The place is not all glitz and glam but elegant. The food is terrific. We've been there for New Year's eve and didn't feel rushed and didn't have to settle for an abridged menu like most places. We've had the Lobster tacos, Filet, Snapper, Venison Chops. Expensive but well worth it.

loud environment on a busy saturday night, but we got seated in the backroom which was very nice and quiet. started with the lobster enchilada and beef tartar. the tartar was OUTSTANDING but the enchilada was forgettable. my entree was the duck & mozzarella ravioli which was great. the creme brulee was a great end to the meal.

Last night I dined with 2 girl friends here specifically for the Dine out Broward special that was going on. Its worth the $35 price point for a 4 course meal, but not worth paying the normal prices. This place has a nice ambiance and is quiet. The service was pretty good and friendly. I recommend the beef tenderloin tartare for starters. It has fresh cilantro and the meat was chopped up into little cubes, then shaped into a small cup, not thinely sliced like i expected. One of my friends had the tempura shrimp and thought it was just ok. For the second course, I recommend the braised beef bolognese, very satisfying flavors, the meat was very tender. My friends had the Mediterranean salad which had no flavor and was not worth ordering. For the main course i tried the Double lamb chops which was good except fot the goat cheese on top. I would hold the cheese next time, for the most part it tasted like cheese wiz and did not add anything to the dish. My friend tried the peppercorn filet mignon and thought it was very good-highly recommend. Last for dessert, I had the bread pudding which i enjoyed the ice cream on the side and left most of the bread pudding. I do not recommend. My friends both tried the creme brule served in asian spoons and thought the dessert was just ok. Overall 3 out of 4 dishes were to my liking. My friends said 2 out of 4 for them.

Cafe Maxx is decent. Everything they do is unmemorable. Every dish had some sort of slipup whether it was slightly overcooking fish or an overly salty side. Some of the appetizers just did not work. At these prices, you expect a great meal and this establishment leaves something to be lacking. The ambience is ok if you like strip mall chic, but I'm sure that has more to do with the utter disappointment with the meal.
